Cooling Hacks That Will Save You Money

If you feel like you’re in the middle of a hot, Bikram yoga class while you’re hanging out in your home this summer, something is not right. It gets hot here in Lexington, and your home should provide a cool escape from the outdoor humidity and heat.

Here are some summer cooling hacks that will reduce your indoor temperature without breaking the bank!

Time For Some Redecorating!

If you have heavy draping or dark blinds covering your windows, these are absorbing heat! Switch your interior color palette, and window coverings, to lighter shades with less pigmentation, and your window treatments will begin to reflect sunlight rather than absorb it! You’ll be able to increase your indoor temperature settings, reducing your monthly cooling costs.

Use Your Kitchen & Bathroom Fans

When cooking indoors this summer, make sure you turn on your stove’s hood and any other ventilation in the area. This will keep any humidity created during your cooking session from accumulating within your home. Using your ventilation fans will allow any increases to dissipate, reducing your indoor temperature!

If you have an outdoor kitchen or barbeque area, try cooking outside this summer! This will keep your home at a more consistent and comfortable temperature.

Additionally, remember to flip your bathroom fan on when taking hot showers and baths! This will wick away moisture, keeping your indoor temperature from rising.

Keep Your Air Vents Open

Ensure your air vents remain open, uncovered, and unobstructed. This will keep your air flowing as it should and prevent air conditioning malfunctions due to built-up pressure within your air ducts! Keeping your air vents ajar will also reduce the chances of a system breakdown, saving you money in the long run.

Change Your Bed Sheets

If your current bed sheets are not 100% cotton, it’s time to make the switch! Cotton sheets are proven to be more breathable and therefore more comfortable during hot summer nights. This will allow you to increase the temperature of your thermostat at night, saving you money on cooling costs!
